MBPJ EXPOSE FLAWS

www.thestar.com.my

Defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) paid the price for their poor defending when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) in a Division One match of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League at the Tun Razak Stadium here yesterday.

The draw has dented BJSS’ title hopes, handing the advantage to Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and BPSS-Thunderbolt.

BJSS are now second in the nine-team standings with 13 points from five matches. UniKL lead the way with 15 points while BPSS-Thunderbolt have 12 and with a game in hand.

BJSS knew they had to win yesterday’s match as they would be facing their title rivals in the coming weeks.

But, despite taking a two-goal lead in the first half – courtesy of Faridzul Afiq Mohamed’s brace in the 10th and 31st minutes – they blew up after the break.

A mistake just a minute after the break saw MBPJ earn a penalty stroke, which was converted by Mohd Ismat Imadi.

MBPJ’s fightback paid off when Mohd Izat Hakimi scored the equaliser, off a penalty corner, in the 66th minute.

Earlier, Sabah’s unbeaten run in Division Two came to end in Ipoh yesterday when they lost 1-3 to Ipoh City Council at the Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium.

Ipoh CC now lead the lower division with 14 points after six matches. There are two more games to go before the preliminary round ends.

Sabah, with nine points from four matches, are still in the title hunt as they have four matches left.

Ipoh CC went 2-0 up in the first half through Mohd Harris Fadila (14th minute) and Mohd Saifuddin (31st).

Sabah pulled a goal back in the 63rd minute through Herik Ahmad Syam but Ipoh CC sealed victory four minutes later through Mohd Azrul Fazrin’s goal.

At the Kuantan Hockey Stadium, MSS Pahang edged Penang Free School (PFS) 5-4 to remain unbeaten after four matches.

The win moves the Pahang team into second place with 12 points.

Mohd Fahmi Abdullah scored a hat-trick in the 25th, 27th and 40th minutes while Mohd Hafiz Zainol and Zulhannan Mazlan chipped in with a goal each in the 58th and 61st minutes respectively.

PFS’ scorers were Mohd Hafify Mohd Rodzi (4th and 69th), Mohd Ammar Adly Abd Rahman (37th) and Muhd Uzair Ahmad Sabri (49th).

In the final Division Two match of the day, MSN Johor and Matri drew 1-1 to share the points.

BJSS HELD

www.jugjet.blogspot.com

DOUBLE champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) were held 2-2 by Petaling Jaya City Council (PJCC) in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League at the Tun Razak Stadium yesterday..

BJSS' title hopes virtually ended with the draw, and if they play like they did against PJCC, will be in big trouble when they square off against title contenders UniKL tomorrow at the same venue.

BJSS struggled to find their footing in the first half and were in the
receiving end most of the time, but capitalised on their counter-attacks to score both the goals.

PJCC had eight penalty corners but could not tuck the ball in as their set
- pieces were too complicated.

BJSS took the lead off Faridzul Afiq in the eight minute and Faridzul
increased the lead in the 31st minute off a freak goal.

He took a tame shot at goal from the fringes of the semi-circle, and PJCC
goalkeeper Ahmad Syahir opened his legs to let the ball in because he felt the shot was taken from outside the scoring circle.

The umpire awarded a goal, but a minute before the half-time hooter
PJCC won a penalty stroke and Ismat Imadi tucked in to narrow the score.

The second half also saw PJCC dominating attack and winning penalty
corners, and Izat Hakimi deflected in a penalty corner attempt in the 65th minute to draw level and salvage a point.

In Division Two, Ipoh City Council burst Sabah’s bubble with a 3-1 win after Harris Fadila (14th), Mohamed Saifuddin (31st) and Azrul Fazrin (67th) were on target.

The Sabah goal was scored by Herik Ahmad in the 63rd minute.

Also in Division Two, Pahang had a close call before they edged Penang Free School 5-4 to strengthen their title quest.

Fahmi Abdullah delivered a hat-trick for Pahang in the 25th, 27th and 40th minutes while the other goals were scored by Hafiz Zainol in the 58th and Zulhannan Mazlan in the 61st.

The Penang goals were scored by Hafify Rodzi (fourth, 68th), Ammar Adly (37th) and Uzair Ahmad (49th).

ACID TEST FOR BJSS

KUALA LUMPUR: It will be a crucial weekend for double champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

BJSS have two tough matches – against former champions Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) today and against title favourites and leaders UniKL on Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Tun Razak Stadium.

BJSS have maximum points from four matches in the nine-team competition. UniKL also have maximum points but they have played five matches.

“Anything less than a win in the two matches could affect their hopes to of retaining the league title,” said BJSS coach S. Prakash.

He added that he was concerned over the scoring ability of forward Dangerous Lee, who is a member of the Project 2013 squad.

“Last year, he scored 13 goals for us in the league but this year he has only managed to score one in four matches.” Prakash conceded that they would face their toughest test against UniKL.

“UniKL are overall a solid team with the services of 10 Project 2013 players and we will start as the underdogs,” he said.

Meanwhile, the match between BJSS Juniors and Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS)-Thunderbolt at the Kuala Lumpur Hockey Stadium on Friday has been postponed because of upgrading works at the stadium. The match will be played at the same venue on May 21.

DO OR DIE FOR BJSS

TWO title contenders clash this weekend with the victors earning a clearer path to the Division One title in the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League.

Leaders UniKL and defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) will square off on Sunday and one team's title dream will vaporise. But if the match ends in a draw, the advantage will move to Bandar Penawar Sports School Thunderbolt.

BJSS coach S. Prakash said this will be do-or-die weekend.

"First we must beat PJCC (Petaling Jaya City Council) tomorrow (today) and I don't think it will be an easy match as they have picked up momentum after their first three defeats," said Prakash.

"We will have to take control from the start as PJCC will also be looking for points to play in the quarter-finals. "And if we beat PJCC, then UniKL will be the big test as our title will be on the line."

BPSS-Thunderbolt also have one match this weekend against BJSS Juniors which they should win to prepare themselves for the clash against UniKL the following weekend.

In Division Two, the title race is turning into a lottery involving Ipoh City Council, Sabah and Pahang.

All three are unbeaten, with Ipoh CC and Sabah clashing first today with the Ipoh side enjoying home ground advantage. Sabah are the surprise item, and it looks like their recent outing in the Razak Cup has boosted team spirit.

TODAY -- Division One: Petaling Jaya City Council v Bukit Jalil Sports School (Tun Razak Stadium, 9pm).

Division Two: Pahang v Penang Frees (Kuantan Stadium, 5pm); Johor v Matri (Johor Baru, 5pm); Ipoh City Council v Sabah (Azlan Shah Stadium, 5pm).

UniKL,SSBJ JANJI SAINGAN SENGIT

Pertemuan UniKL, SSBJ janji saingan sengit hoki remaja

WEEKEND PREVIEW

KUALA LUMPUR: This weekend will be a defining moment for two of the title challengers in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League.

League leaders Universiti Kuala Lumpur and defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) will meet each other on Sunday and it could mean the end of the title dream for one of the two teams.

But then again both teams could suffer a blow to their title hopes and hand over the advantage to BPSS-Thunderbolt if they draw the match.

Thus both teams have a lot at stake this weekend and will have to keep up their performance level at a high note.

UniKL have just one match to play and currently have played a game more than BJSS. They lead with 15 points after five matches while the two sports schools have 12 points from four matches.

These three teams are also safe bets for a quarter-final berth and one more win over the weekend will ensure that last eight place.

BJSS coach S. Prakash said that this would be a win or bust situation for them over the weekend.

“We also have MBPJ to play on Friday and they have picked up steam since their first three defeats.

“It is not a matter of ensuring that we keep our improvement level and take step at a time. MBPJ will be a big test as they looking for points to stay in the top five.

“And if we get through it than Unikl will be the big test as our title will be on the line in a win of lose match."

BPSS-Thunderbolt also has one match this weekend when they play BJSS Juniors. They should win the match and that will set them up for the match with Unikl the following weekend.

Unikl coach I. Vickneswaren said that for them the next two matches would decide their title run.

“It all comes down to the next two matches with BJSS and BPSS-Thunderbolt. We win and the title is ours to lose. The match is against BPSS Juniors.

“We have had a good rest and will be ready or the encounter with BJSS. The school team has gone through this kind of a pressure situation before and will know what to expect.

“But we have some very experienced players as well and I am hoping they will provide the vital support for the young players. I expect a good match and it is likely to be close,” he added.

In Division Two the title race has slowly turned into a two-way battle between Ipoh City Council and MSN Sabah.

Both teams are unbeaten and their clash on Friday could prove decisive for the title. The match will be played in Ipoh and the city council team will have home ground support.

Debutants Sabah has surprised many but their recent outing in the Razak Cup competition have earned them valuable experience.

Thus the Division Two title run will become a lot clearer after this weekend’s matches.

RACE TO THE TOP

Division One leaders Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) have three matches remaining in the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League (MJHL) but the results of their next two matches will determine whether they get to lift the title in their debut season.

UniKL have full points after five matches and they face a real big test on Sunday against defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS). The following weekend, they will be up against the other title contenders, Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS)-Thunderbolt.

Winning these two matches will make it a formality for UniKL to seal the title in their last fixture against BPSS Juniors.

Sabri: UniKL’s top scorer with 11 goals.

UniKL coach I. Vickneswaren said yesterday: “We have had a great run for a team playing for the first time in the league. Our ability to win the title will depend on how we fare in the next two matches. If we draw the matches, it will be difficult for us as well as our opponents.”

The fixtures favour BPSS-Thunderbolt, who play against UniKL on May 7 and against BJSS on May 14.

“BPSS-Thunderbolt will have the advantage of knowing what to do. A draw between us and BJSS will be in their favour,” said Vickneswaren.

In Mohamed Sabri Mohamed, UniKl have a top penalty corner flicker and he is giving national forward Faisal Saari of BPSS-Thunderbolt a run for his money. Sabri is the leading scorer with 11 while Faisal has bagged nine.

BJSS, who have had a slow start to the season, are aware of the threat posed by UniKL and BPSS-Thunderbolt.

“We have not been at our best but we hope to improve by the time we meet UniKL and BPSS-Thunderbolt,” said coach S. Prakash.

“They have good goal scorers and that makes it difficult for us. We have to find ways to stop them. At the same time, we need our forwards to do better.”

But BJSS can take heart that they have the best defensive record having conceded only one goal in four matches.

Still the goal-scoring prowess of UniKL and BPSS-Thunderbolt will worry them.

CRUCIAL WEEK AHEAD

www.nst.com.my

NEXT weekend will be crucial for double champions Bukit Jalil Sports School in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League.

They play an erratic Petaling Jaya City Council on Friday as a warm-up to their crucial encounter against high-riding newcomers UniKL on Sunday.

In their five matches to date, UniKL have scored 28 goals and let in five. The double champions meanwhile, have scored 15 and let in one in four matches.

The other contenders for the title this season, Bandar Penawar Sports School Thunderbolt have also been impressive in their four matches, scoring 25 goals and letting in three.

Thunderbolt have an easy encounter against Bukit Jalil Sports School Juniors on Friday and are expected to go on a goal-scoring spree to consolidate their position in the standings.

"The tournament has reached its crucial stage for us, so we need to beat PJCC by a good margin before playing this season's favourites UniKL," said BJSS coach S. Prakash.

BJSS keep improving with every match, while UniKL, in their last three matches, have been slow starters and only get going in the second half.

"We need to be consistent for 70 minutes to beat a team like UniKL and my boys, after a slow start, have regained their scoring touch," added Prakash.

"It will be a close battle, but I expect my players to come out tops so that we will have a fighting chance of winning the title when we play BPSS Thunderbolt on May 14."

The good news for BJSS, if they beat UniKL, is that Thunderbolt will most likely lose their prolific 19-year-old striker Faizal Saari to the Azlan Shah Cup for the May 14 encounter which would make their quest to lift the title that much easier, provided they do not stumble against UniKL.

FRIDAY -- Division One: Bukit Jalil Sports School Juniors v Bandar Penawar Sports School Thunderbolt (Kuala Lumpur HA, 5pm), Petaling Jaya City Council v Bukit Jalil Sports School (Tun Razak, 9pm).

Division Two: Pahang v Penang Frees (Kuantan, 5pm), Johor v Matri (Johor Baru, 5pm), Ipoh City Council v Sabah (Azlan Shah, 5pm).

ELEMEN "ABANG-ADIK" SEKAT UNIKL?

UNIKL SET TO REGAIN TOP SPOT

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) will be aiming to regain the Division One lead in the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League when the play Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Juniors at the KL Hockey Stadium here today.

Three teams – BPSS-Thunderbolt, UniKL and defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) – are tied at top spot with 12 points after four matches.

BPSS Thunderbolt are ahead on goal difference, followed by UniKL and BJSSS.

In the fray: BJSS’ Thung Wei Chia will be in the line-up for the crucial match against UniKL today.

UniKL coach I. Vickneswaran said yesterday that the league had become more interesting since the title race turned into a three-cornered fight.

“Of course the pressure will be on us to regain the lead. So I will tell my players to get me the three points. It is better to be in the lead than in the chasing pack,” he said.

“We will make sure that we are ready for BJSS Juniors because we expect a tough time.”

Vickneswaren expects BJSS Juniors to have a go at his team in a bid to do their seniors a favour.

“Even a draw will affect our title chances. If any of the leading teams were to drop points at this stage, it will be like a defeat,” he said.

“We have scored a lot of goals but I do not want the players to be pressured into going for big wins. Even a 1-0 win is enough. If the goals start flowing, it will be bonus.”

UniKL have one injury worry in midfielder N. Ugenthiren, who had to undergo a nose operation and will not be fielded today.

He suffered the injury during the Razak Cup tournament and underwent surgery a few days ago.

“We have capable replacement for him. We want him to fully recover before playing again,” said Vickneswaren.

In the other Division One matches, Anderson and Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will be looking for wins to keep their hopes of a top-five finish in the preliminary round.

Anderson have been winlesss in their last three matches and will be hoping to get back on the right track against lowly MSS Kelantan in Kuala Terengganu.

MBPJ, who will play BPSS Juniors, recorded their first win on Friday – defeating BJSS Juniors 4-0 – after losing their opening three matches.

They have moved up to sixth place and a win over BPSS Juniors will take them into fifth position.

A SIXER FROM FAISAL

From: www.nst.com.my

THE senior teams of the Bukit Jalil and Bandar Penawar Sports Schools went on eight-goal rampages against their opponents to stamp their mark on Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League yesterday.

BJSS clobbered Kelantan 8-0, and not to be outdone, BPSS-Thunderbolt hammered Anderson of Ipoh by the same margin.

National player Faizal Saari, 19, scored six goals for Thunderbolt in the 11th, 15th, 21st, 37th, 59th and 68th minutes.

Firhan Ashaari scored the other two in the 17th and 70th minute.

As for BJSS, Faridzul Afiq Mohamad delivered a hat-trick (41st, 51st, 54th) while Ahmad Termidzi (fifth), Fitri Ismail (21st), Shahriman Zali (25th), Asraf Bahari (60th) and Khairul Naim (70th) scored a goal each.

BJSS coach S. Prakash, however, lamented that eight was not enough.

"We are tied on 12 points with Thunderbolt and UniKL, but both have scored 25 and 22 goals respectively, while we only have 15 after four matches.

"I believe the race to the title will be very close from here on, and goals scored will play a crucial role in the crowning of the league champions.

"From now, we not only need to keep winning, but also score as many as we can to keep pace with Thunderbolt and UniKL," said Prakash.

SIX GOAL FAISAL

From: www.thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: National forward Faisal Saari scored six goals to inspire BPSS-Thunderbolt to an 8-0 hammering of Anderson in a Division One match of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League at the Bandar Penawar Hockey Stadium yesterday.

The big win took BPSS-Thunderbolt to the top of the standings with 12 points, the same as Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS).

But BPSS-Thunderbolt lead on goal difference.

Defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) kept pace with an 8-0 thrashing of MSS Kelantan at the Kuala Terengganu Hockey Stadium.

But Faisal was the star of the day as he single-handedly chalked up the three points for the leaders and taking his goal tally in the tournament to nine.

His goals came in the 11th, 15th, 21st, 37th, 59th and 68th minutes while Mohd Firhan Ashaari chipped in with a brace in the 17th and 70th minutes to complete the rout.

In Kuala Terengganu, BJSS finally found their scoring touch to notch up their biggest win in the league.

Ahmad Termidzi Ismail got the show going by opening accounts in the fifth minute before Mohd Fitri Ismail (21st) and Mohd Shahriman Zali (25th) gave BJSS a comfortable 3-0 half-time lead.

After the break, Faridzul Afiq Mohd scored a hat-trick in the 41st, 51st and 54th minutes before Mohd Asraf Bahari (60th) and Mohd Khairul Naim Johari (70th) handed MSS Kelantan their third defeat.

BJSS coach S. Prakash was happy with the win – and the goals.

“Yes, it was a big win. But, like I said, we just went for the points first. The forwards are finally finding their touch and this is good as we will be facing the big teams. There is still some work to be done and we must keep improving,” he said.

In Division Two, Matri of Perlis and SMK Pengkalan Permatang scored their first win in three matches.

Matri beat SMK Datuk Taha 5-1 in Alor Setar while SMK PP edged Klang 3-2.

Tunku Besar Secondary School went down 2-3 to MSS Pahang yesterday but continue to top the standings with eight points.

FIVE WAY BATTLE FOR TITLE

www.nst.com.my

EARLY leaders UniKL will start their battle against four sports schools in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League from today.

The newcomers, who have played four matches and collected a maximum 12 points, will start with Bukit Jalil Sports School Juniors this weekend, and then Bukit Jalil Sports School next weekend, Bandar Penawar Sports School-Thunderbolt after that and end their schools battle against Bandar Penawar Sports School Juniors.

However, the standings are not expected to change after this weekend as the three early contenders have relatively easy matches.

UniKL should have an easy time against BJSS Juniors, while joint-second Thunderbolt and BJSS also have easy matches against Anderson and Petaling Jaya City Council respectively.

BPSS-Thunderbolt coach Wan Roslan Wan Rahman said yesterday that even though Anderson lost their last two matches, they will not be easy.

"Anderson are still a dangerous team and we will not take any chances against them. For us the three points are very important to stay in the title race.

"So we will have to play hard and ensure we convert the chances that come our way," he said.

The Bandar Penawar team have an impressive scoring rate with 17 goals in three matches. They are second only to UniKL who have scored 22 goals in four matches.

BJSS coach S. Prakash lamented his team's poor scoring rate. "We are missing too many chances and our play has not been that good either. Against Anderson we made it difficult for ourselves," he said.

"We need to improve fast and score more goals against weaker opponents, as we have only scored seven so far." Anderson face another tough weekend as they chase to remain in the top five. Besides BPSS-Thunderbolt they will also travel to Kuala Terengganu to play Kelantan.

The top five teams from Division One and top three from Division Two qualify for the knockout stage.

TODAY -- Division One: Bukit Jalil Sports School v Petaling Jaya City Council (Tun Razak, 7pm), BPSS-Thunderbolt v Anderson (Bandar Penawar, 5pm), Kelantan v Bukit Jalil Sports School (Terengganu, 5pm).

Division Two: Tunku Besar Secondary School v Pahang (Tampin, 5pm), Kuala Selangor v Johor (Pandamaran, 5pm), Matri v Datuk Taha (Alor Star, 5pm).

SUNDAY -- Division One: Petaling Jaya City Council v Bandar Penawar Juniors (Tun Razak, 8pm), Kelantan v Anderson (Terengganu, 5pm), UniKL v Bukit Jalil Sports School Juniors (KLHA Stadium, 5pm).

Division Two: Matri v Sabah (Alor Star, 5pm), Kuala Selangor v Ipoh City Council (Pandamaran, 5pm), Johor v Pahang (Johor Baru, 5pm).

BJSS NOT PANICKING, YET

KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School’s (BJSS) poor scoring rate is cause for concern but it is not going to stop them taking a cautious approach in the Division One competition of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

Coach S. Prakash said that although their two main rivals in the title race had piled up the goals, they were not about to follow suit.

BJSS have scored just seven goals in three matches while Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS)-Thunderbolt have 17 from as many matches. Leaders Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) have 22 goals from four matches.

“I do not think it’s wise for us to worry and start thinking about scoring many goals. It’s better for us to ensure that we get full points in matches,” said Prakash.

“Our main rivals have stacked up the goals and it’s no point chasing them in this area.”

Only three BJSS players have been on target thus far. They are Kavin Kartik, who has scored three penalty corner goals, forward Mohamed Termidzi Ismail with three field goals and midfielder Mohamed Redzhwan Jaafar.

Their other forwards, Dangerous Lee and Faridzul Afiq Mohamed, have yet to hit the target.

“I am not unduly worried over their form. The players are playing well but the teamwork is not good yet. Play was scrappy in our last match against Anderson. I want a more fluid movement from the players and this will be crucial when we meet our main rivals.”

BJSS have one match this weekend – against MSS Kelantan in Kuala Terengganu today. BPSS-Thunderbolt and UniKL also have one match each – against Anderson and BJSS Juniors respectively today and on Sunday. All three teams will be looking to consolidate their positions as the front runners.

UniKL coach I. Vickneswaren said that their priority was also to get full points. It is important that we do not drop points against the lower ranked teams. We have four matches remaining and for now, winning is all that matters.”

MBPJ GOING TO LEAN SPELL

Worst season yet for ex-champs MBPJ

KUALA LUMPUR: Former champions Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) are going through one of their worst seasons in the MHF-Milo-NSC Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

MBPJ, who won the overall title in 2006, have lost all their three matches in Division One thus far and they are at the bottom of table, having conceded 12 goals and scoring just three.

MBPJ were beaten 0-2 by Anderson in the opening match before crashing to a 2-6 defeat by Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS)-Thunderbolt and a 1-4 loss to debutants UniKL.

MBPJ have five matches more to play and they need to start winning if they harbour hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage.

Top five teams in Division One and top three from Division Two will feature in the knockout stage.

MBPJ assistant team manager Zanal Abidin Ismail said that their path to make it to the knockout stage appeared to be a rather difficult one.

“Based on the team performances in the first three matches, I doubt that we can win the remaining five,” he said.

“This will probably be our worst season since we made our debut in the MJHL in 1996. Losing the services of coach Paul Raj is one of the reasons for us having a weak team.”

MBPJ will play against Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) Juniors at the Tun Razak Stadium today and they will be up against BPSS Juniors at the same venue on Sunday. If they lose both matches, they will be out of contention for a place in the knockout stage.

WEEK THREE PREVIEW

For the three leading teams in the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League, this weekend matches will help them to consolidate their positions at the top of the standings.

Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) is the top team with 12 points from four matches. Their rival contenders are defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and Bandar Penawar SS-Thunderbolt.

These two teams are with nine points after three matches. Thus there is not likely to be any changes at the top as all three teams are expected to win. All three teams have just one match to play this weekend.

On Friday BJSS will play MSS Kelantan away while BPSS-Thunderbolt will meet Anderson at home. UniKL will only play on Sunday against Bukit Jalil SS Juniors.

BPSS-Thunderbolt coach wan Roslan Wan Rahman said yesterday that collecting three points is crucial and will not under estimate Anderson who go into the match after losing twice in a row.

“They (Anderson) are still a dangerous team and we will not take any chances against them. For us the three points is very important to stay in the title race.

“So we will have to play hard and ensure we convert the chances that come our way,” he said.

The Bandar Penawar team also has an impressive scoring rate with 17 goals in three matches. They are surpassed only by UniKl who has scored 22 goals in the four matches.

The three teams also know that in the end goal difference might play a crucial role in the title race.

BJSS coach S. Prakash lamented on his team’s poor scoring rate where they have scored only seven goals.

“We are missing too many chances and our play has not been that good either. Against Anderson we made hard weather of our win.

“We need to improve fast and make sure we eliminate the mistakes in our defence,” he said.

Anderson faces another tough weekend as they chase to remain in the top five in the standings.

Besides the BPSS-Thunderbolt team they also have to travel to Kuala Terengganu for the match against MSS Kelantan.

Anderson coach Mokhtar Baharuddin said the fight to be among the top five will be great as well.

“I think it is safe to say the top three places will be taken up by the current leaders. But teams like the Kelantan outfit and MBPJ are very much in the reckoning. So we need to win the matches against the lower teams to ensure we are in the top five,” he added.

The top five teams from Division One and the top three from Division Two will qualify for the knockout stage.

For leaders UniKL their matches with BJSS Juniors is the first in the series of four matches with the sports school sides.

BJSS is next weekend followed by BPSS-Thundebolt on MY 7. Their last match in the preliminary round is against BPSS Juniors.

Some of the matches in Division One over the next two weekends could be postponed due to the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

Some junior players are involved with the national Under 18 teams and matches involving these players will be rescheduled.

SPORTS SCHOOLS IN UNIKL'S WAY

KUALA LUMPUR: Debutants Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) is just four matches way from a historic league title in the MHF-Milo-NSC-Junior Hockey League but their remaining games are fraught with danger.

And all four matches in the remaining schedule are against the Sports School teams.

They play BJSS Juniors on Sunday followed by the second BJSS team on May 2.

Their next two matches are against BPSS-Thunderbolt on May 7 and the BPSS Juniors on May 14.

UniKL coach I. Vickneswaran said the sports schools stand in their way as they attempt to deny one of them from winning the league title

UniKL lead the way with 12 points while BPSS-Thunderbolt and BJSS are on nine points with one match in hand.

The trio are the contenders for the title following Anderson’s exit from the race when they lost to UniKL and BJSS.

“We are looking good for a maiden title but the two sports schools will be our main challengers. It is obvious we have to beat all four school teams to win the title,” said Vickneswaran.

UniKL have proven that they are a goal scoring outfit after netting 22 goals in four matches to top the standings.

“I will not pick out the outstanding player in the team as all have done well.It is the overall team work that has stood us in good stead. Consistency is another factor and we hope to keep up our form in the remaining matches,” he added.

BPSS-Thunderbolt have been impressive as well after scoring 17 goals in three matches. They have national forward Faisal Saari, whose hattrick in the 8-1 win over MSS Kelantan, makes him the major player in the team.

Double champions BJSS have been plodding along in the three matches and have been far from impressive.

Their sloppy display against Anderson stood out like a sore thumb and their poor scoring rate is also cause for concern. They have scored seven goals in three matches.

BJSS coach S. Prakash said they will have to improve greatly to be able to challenge BPSS-Thunderbolt and UniKL for the title.

“The main thing is that we are still in the running and we hope to stay that way,” said Prakash.

TIGHT DIVISION ONE FIGHT

From: www.nst.com.my

By Jugjet Singh

THE MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League Division One title race is fast turning into a three-horse race, and very little separates the trio at this early stage.

UniKL have been impressive but hot on their heels are Bandar Penawar Sports School-Thunderbolt and double champions Bukit Jalil Sports School.

UniKL beat Anderson and Petaling Jaya City Council by six goals each but there were moments of madness in the team which should be of concern to coach I. Vikneswaran.

"Winning matches is one thing, but consistency is required to win the title in a close tournament like this," said Vikneswaran.

The weak link for the newcomers is a bungling strike-force as they should have won by double digit margins instead of scoring only six.

"Against the two sports schools, chances will be few and far in between, so I will have to polish the strikers' finishing before the weekend."

Among the three, Thunderbolt look like the team to beat in Division One this year.

Powered by national player Faisal Saari, Thunderbolt are keeping pace with UniKL after winning all three matches played so far convincingly.

Thunderbolt have scored a total of 17 goals and conceded only three.

FRIDAY -- Division One: Bukit Jalil Sports School v Petaling Jaya City Council (Tun Razak, 7pm), BPSS-Thunderbolt v Anderson (Bandar Penawar, 5pm), Kelantan v Bukit Jalil Sports School (Terengganu, 5pm).

Division Two: Tunku Besar Secondary School v Pahang (Tampin, 5pm), Kuala Selangor v Johor (Pandamaran, 5pm), Matri v Datuk Taha (Alor Star, 5pm).

REVIEW WEEK TWO

While debutants UniKL have been creating a storm in the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League, the threat of Bandar Penawar Sports School-Thunderbolt cannot be ignored.

UniKL picked up vital wins over Anderson and Petaling Jaya MC but their drop in form in the match against the Petaling Jaya side must surely be a cause of concern for coach I. Vikneswaran.

“Winning matches is one thing, but consistency is what is required in a tournament like this,” conceded Vikneswaran.

“We have to be sharper in front of goal and make use the chances that come our way.

“Against the likes of the two sports schools, chances will be few in between, hence I will work on the finishing aspect of the team in training.

“Nonetheless I am happy with the overall performances and we are on the right track so far.”

But while Vickneswaran and his players sit pretty on the top of the table, it is the TNB assisted SBBP-Thunderbolt that could well derail their chances of winning the league title.

Powered by national player, Faisal Saari, the team that has benefited from the technical expertise provided by the likes of Nor Saiful Zaini Nasiruddin and Lailin Abu Hassan have been keeping in touch with UniKL, winning all their three matches thus far and are in second spot with nine points, having played a game less then leaders UniKL.

SSBP-Thunderbolt has been impressive having scored a total of 17 goals and conceding only three. In Faisal, they have a poacher extraordinaire but he is well supported by the likes of Mohd Firhan Ashari and Mohd Haniff Mohd Saidin can be counted upon to deliver the goals, as evident in the 8-1 rout over MSS Kelantan on Sunday.

Their pedigree will soon be put to a severe test this coming weekend as they play host to Anderson. However the form of the Ipoh team has left much to be desired as they play rather badly away from home.

In the second division, Tunku Besar Secondary School failed to take advantage of MSN Sabah’s inactivity and only managed to draw their matches last weekend.

Having played two matches more then the East Malaysian side, TBSS will have to start winning again if they want to put pressure on the Sabahans.

UNKL ON A LUCKY STREAK

UNIKL started off on a sloppy note, but made amends in the second half to thrash Petaling Jaya City Council (PJCC) 6-2 in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League yesterday.

Playing in front of a large following at the Kuala Lumpur HA Stadium, UniKl survived many early scares when they were swamped by PJCC strikers.

Sabri Mohamad (ninth) and Zulhairi Hashim (35th) gave UniKL a 2-0 lead going into the breather but both were opportunistic goals.

PJCC pulled one back two minutes after the restart, when Rifhan Azhar was on target, and the match looked like it was heading for an upset.

However, UniKL surged ahead with more lucky goals Syamim Yusoffrom (50th), Aminuddin Abu(55th, 58th) and Sabri Mohamad (67th).

The second PJCC goal was scored off a penalty stroke by Azuwan Mahiden in the 56th minute.

“We were lucky to take a 2-0 lead after the first half hooter blew, as PJCC were the attacking side while my players scored both the goals off a handful of breaks that we got.

“The 6-2 score does not do justice to the way PJCC played, and sometimes, a team needs a lucky break like this to continue their march,” said UniKL coach I. Vickneswaran.

UNIKL RIDING ON A CREST

Debutants move three clear after fourth win

KUALA LUMPUR: Debutants Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) moved three points clear at the top of the Division One standings with a 6-2 thumping of Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) in a MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League match at the KL Hockey Stadium here yesterday.

UniKL have 12 points after four matches while defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) remained third with nine points after securing their third win.

BPSS-Thunderbolt, who hammered MSS Kelantan 8-1, also have nine points but are second on goal difference.

Yesterday, Mohd Sabri Mohd (ninth, 67th) and Mohd Aminuddin (55th, 58th) scored a brace each while Mohd Zulhairi Hashim (35th) and Mohd Syamin Mohd Yusof (50th) netted one each to lead UniKL to their third big win.

MBPJ replied through Muhd Rifhan Mohd Azhar (38th) and Mohd Azuwan Mahiden Pitchey (58th).

Earlier at the same venue, BJSS chalked up their third straight win when they beat Anderson from Ipoh 3-1.

Anderson took the lead in the ninth minute through Mohd Firdaus Sidek off a penalty corner attempt.

But Kavin Kartik equalised for BJSS in the 18th minute before putting them ahead in the 50th minute with another penalty corner goal.

Seven minutes later Ahmad Termidzi Ismail sealed victory for the champions with a field goal.

But coach S. Prakash was far from pleased with the performance put up by his double champions.

“It was such a scrappy match and we wasted a lot of chances. We were lucky to have got off with full points. There are a lot areas we need to work on but the main thing that worries me is the number missed chances,” he said.

For Anderson, it was their second straight defeat after the 1-6 drubbing by UniKL on Friday. This has effectively ruled them out of the running for the league title and Anderson will be more concerned with finishing in the top five to make the cut for the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, BPSS-Thunderbolt’s 8-1 win over MSS Kelantan will certainly put them in the limelight in the title race.

UNIKL PAMER TARING

UNIVERSITI Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) terus mempamerkan taringnya apabila menundukkan Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) 6-2 untuk kekal mendahului Divisyen Satu Liga Hoki Remaja Malaysia (JHLM), semalam.

MBPJ bangkit merapatkan jurang menerusi Mohd Rifhar Mohd Azhar, tiga minit sebaik babak kedua bermula, sebelum Mohd Syamim Yusof menambah gol ketiga UniKL pada minit ke-50 disusuli Mohd Aminuddin Abu (m55).

Jurulatih mahu pemain UniKL kekal fokus

From: http://www.bharian.com.my/

Oleh Hasnira Hassan

JANGAN lupa daratan.

Coach will be happy if UniKL can remain on top

From: www.thestar.com.my

By S. RAMAGURU

KUALA LUMPUR: Debutants Universiti Kuala Lumpur’s (UniKL) lead atop Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League will come under pressure when they take on Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) at the KL Hockey Stadium today.

And even UniKL coach I. Vicknesweran admitted yesterday that he would feel a whole lot happier if they can get through the weekend unscathed.
“To be honest, we are a bit surprised with our performance but it feels good to have started off with three wins in our debut season. There is still a long way to go and the main thing is to come off this weekend unbeaten so that we can face the top teams with confidence,” he said yesterday.
UniKL have a maximum nine points after three matches and are ahead of Anderson only on goal difference.
Vicknesweran’s men started their campaign with a 3-1 win over the women’s national team and a 7-1 thrashing of MSS Kelantan. On Friday, they hammered high-riding Anderson 6-1.
Vicknesweran said their participation in the senior league last year had help them gain experience.
“But we still did not get the full complement of players for the junior league. Two players have gone to the BPSS-Thunderbolt team while national junior trainees Mohamed Faiz and Mohamed Izzat are playing in the Dutch League,” he said.
“So, we are lacking some quality players. We are quite happy to challenge the big teams but whether we can remain in that position remains to be seen.”
He said MBPJ had good players and that the two defeats they had suffered did not reflect their actual strength.
“MBPJ have always been slow starters but they always end up among the top four teams. So we expect them to be stronger and I just hope they do not hit form tomorrow against us,” said Vicknesweran.
“We are not going to underestimate them. That is why I believe that it will be a big achievement if can get all three points against them.”
The UniKL-MBPJ match is one of the two top-of-the-table clashes today.
The other is between defending champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) and Anderson.
BJSS have to win to keep their title hopes alive while another defeat for Anderson will put them out of the race.
Anderson coach Mokhtar Baharuddin knows it and said: “The most we can do is to try and play as hard as we can.”
“It will be tough but we are not giving up that easily. We will play to win and hopefully cut down on our mistakes. We also need to be sharper.”
BJSS had been taking a cautious approach, winning both their earlier matches 2-0.
And coach S. Prakash will continue to adopt the same policy.
“Anderson are wounded and will surely try to bounce back against us. As I have said earlier, every match will be crucial and no team can be taken for granted,” said Prakash.
