DIVISION ONE PREVIEW

This year's MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey league will see an intrguing fight for the title with five-time double champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) facing tougher competition.

It is interesting to note that two regular pioneer mebers of the league , Old La Sallians Association of Klang (Olak) and Tenaga Nasional, will not take part in the league this year.

Olak has cited financial reasons for their non participation while Tenaga has combined forces with Bandar Penawar Sports School and will play under the BPSS-Thunderbolt banner.

Thus they will be the front runners for the double this year and BJSS has acknowledged that they will have a hard time winning even one title.

The other teams in the nine team Division One are the Juniors teams of Bukit Jalil and Bandar Penawar along with Kijang Mas Kelantan, Anderson Ipoh, MBPJ and new comers Universiti KL and the national women's hockey team (MWHA).

The Kelantan team and Anderson are also considered as potential contenders but it will be interesting to see how the MWHA team fare since they are playing against the boys.

The women's team is the same one that is going for the World Cup qualifier later this month. The top five teams will qualify for the knockout stage with the three coming from the lower Division Two.

BJSS coach S. Prakash said that they expected an open title race and it would be foolish to under estimate any of the teams.

"All the teams have hired juniors players and many of my experience players have also been snapped up these teams.

"Thus we cannot expect to have it easy and neither will this be a two horse race like it was the previous two years," he said.

BJSS won the double in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and have been the league champions since 2003.

The BPSS-Thunderbolt combination should be a top draw but it remains to be seen if they can deliver.

MWHA coach Yahya Atan said that for them it is the chance to gain quality pracrtice matches that prompted their entry.

"So we will play hard and try for the title as this will give my team the much needed match practice under match conditions.

"We are serious and I hope the teams will not take it easy against us," he said.

There is no chance of the teams to take it easy against the women as they are also eligible for the points as well as prize money that comes with the title.

Newcomer Unikl is also said to be a serious contender considering that they took part in the Premier League and in the process some of the players gained a wealth of experience.

The first round of matches will show just how the teams will fare and like Prakash said every match will count from Day One.

Overall an interesting league is in store and hopefully a bigger pool of contenders will make the title fight a close battle till the end.

SECOND DIVISION PREVIEW

The Division Two title is likely to be a very open race although the usual suspects will play a pivotal role in the run-up to the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League.

Three new teams will in the fray with six of the teams returning for yet another season. The newcomers are Sabah MSN, Ipoh City Council-MSN and MSSP-MPK Pahang.

Negri Sembilan’s usual entries SMK Datuk Taha and Tunku Besar SS will certainly be considered as title contenders as they have always challenged for honours in the past.

Matri Perlis and Penang Free School-USM are the northern challengers while SMK Pengakalan Permatang will be Selangor’s sole representative while SAB Johor will play under the MSSM Johor-MSN Johor-PHJ-MSAB (MSN Johor) banner.

It is interesting to note that a team from East Malaysia will making its debut in the MJHL and this will add a little glamour to the Division two matches. The Sabah team has set up camp in Klang and will use the Pandamaran Stadium as their home venue.

Another Klang team SMK Teknik had initially entered a team but they failed to send in their entry fees and team lists. They also did not attend the team’s managers meeting last week. Thus the organisers have struck their name out and have revised the fixtures.

For the first time KL do not have a team in the lower division seem by many as a stepping stone to the elite grouping.

The action starts on Friday with three matches followed by another three on Sunday.

Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) secretary Hashim Mohamed Yusof said that the top three teams will qualify for the knockout stage. Last year only two teams made the cut.

"This year the format is for the top five teams from Division One and three from the lower division playing at the knockout stage. There will be total of 18 teams with nine teams in each division.

The total prize money is RM82,000 with the top four finishers in Division two winning prize money," he said.

The champion will receive RM7.000 while the runners-up will get RM3.500. Third and fourth placed teams will receive RM2,000 and RM1,000.

PAHANG AIM FOR LAST EIGHT

Having three of their players in the Razak Cup side that won the Division Two title has given the Majlis Sukan Pahang side the confidence to face their opponents in the MHF-Milo_NSC Junior Hockey League season that commences this Friday.

The three, Adrizal Ariff Abd Rahim, Zulhan Mazlan and Mohd Hafiz Zainul are expected to be the key players to lead the East Coast sides challenge in the competition.

And with the entire team comprising of players that will carry the challenge of Pahang in Sukma this June, the team is expected to do well as they have benefited by playing in the Kuantan Hockey League recently.

Team Manager Jamaluddin Sura said that the team has been in centralized training over the past three months for Sukma and the participation in the JHL will give the players added exposure in their quest to do well in Sukma.

“We have a balanced team and I am optimistic that the players will do their very best in the competition,” said Jamaluddin.

“While we are in the midst of preparing for Sukma, it does not mean that we are taking our participation in the league lightly as the team has been set with specific targets.

Last year Pahang were represented by SMK Temerloh who finished as Division Two runners-up but failed to make it past the last eight stage in the overall competition.

“Our target is to make the last eight and in order to do that we will have to finish amongst the top three in our division,” said Jamaluddin who is the Vice President of Kuantan HA and council member of the Pahang HA.

Pahang has been noted for producing youngsters with good individual skills, in the likes of Ismail Abu and Mohd Al Fadhil who have gone on to don national colours.

And this time the eyes will be on 17 year old Hafiz , who had a good Razak Cup and is expected to score the goals for Pahang in their quest to do well in the junior league.

MILO AND NSC TO SPONSOR JHL

Media Statement for Partnership Ceremony
Saturday, 3rd April 2010
Hotel Royale Chulan - Bilik Tun Sri Lanang 1&2

National Sports Council (NSC), MILO and the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) have entered a partnership to formulate NSC & MILO as our two core official sponsors for the Junior Hockey League 2010 beginning Friday, 9 April 2010 until Sunday, 30 May 2010.

More importantly, this partnership between NSC, MILO and MHF reflects the commitment among the parties in promoting and development of hockey at the youth level especially players below Under 19 of years.

A total of eighteen (18) teams shall be participating in this year’s JHL. There shall be two (2) division i.e. 9 teams shall be placed at Division 1 and 9 teams in Division II. The teams based on the Divisions are as follows:

The new contenders that are playing for the first time are UniKL, MSN Sabah, MSSP-MPK Pahang and MBI-MSN Perak.

And for the first time in the Malaysian Hockey history, we have included a National Women (MWHA) side to play in the JHL 2010 in assisting them to prepare and provide good quality matches for their three important assignments which is the World Cup Qualifier in Chile, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in the later part of 2010.

This JHL2010 shall be the catalyst for the players to perform and exhibits their potential to be selected for the National Junior and National Senior team. More so, this shall provide the players to be headhunted by the top Clubs by providing employment, sports playing contract and education via scholarship.

During the JHL2010, the Astro ARENA shall provide highlights of the matches over the weekend and the FINALS of JHL2010 shall be shown live on Astro ARENA.

We would like to thank especially NSC and MILO for being our main sponsors for the JHL2010 and also other sponsors such as Astro ARENA.

To the Media members, thank you very much for the coverage and as well as helping us in promoting hockey throughout the nation.
