BJSS CONCEDE TITLE RACE

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) coach S. Prakash has conceded his team have lost the race for the Division One title in the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League after they drew 1-1 with leaders Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) at the Tun Razak Stadium last night.

It was the second successive draw for the defending champions, who played to a 2-2 stalemate against Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) at the same venue on Friday.

Prakash said that the advantage was now with UniKL and Bandar Penawar Sports School (BPSS)-Thunderbolt.

“We are down by four points and it will be difficult to win the title now. We still have to play against BPSS-Thunderbolt. The way I see it, either UniKL or BPSS-Thunderbolt will win the title,” he said.

“UniKl are a good side and they have very good players. We have to ensure that we win the next two matches to keep up the pressure on the two leading teams. We must at least finish second.”

BJSS had control of the match in the first half and took the lead in the 25th minute through a penalty corner taken by Kavin Kartik.

UniKL equalised in the 46th minute with their top scorer, Mohamed Sabri Mohamed, flicking home a penalty corner. It was his 12th goal of the season – all from penalty corners.

UniKL, who won all their five previous matches, now have two matches more to play – against BPSS-Thunderbolt on May 7 and against BPSS Juniors on May 21.

At the Sultan Azlan Hockey Stadium in Ipoh, Anderson hopes of making the quarter-finals were dented when they were beaten 0-5 by BPSS Juniors.

A win would have virtually sealed Anderson a place among the top five. The Perak side have completed their fixtures with 10 points and BPSS Juniors will pip them to a place in the quarter-finals if they can two of their remaining three matches.

BPSS Juniors scored their win over Anderson with goals by Mohamed Shahzril Saabah (6th), Amir Zulkarnian (32nd), Mohamed Khairul Adha (34th), Mohamed Hanif Azemi (35th) and Mohamed Dzahiruddin (59th).

MBPJ overtook Anderson on goal difference when they recorded their third win and moved to 10 points with a game in hand. MBPJ defeated MSS Kelantan 4-1 at the Kuala Terengganu Stadium.

The top five teams in Division One and the top three in Division Two qualify for the knockout stage.

UNIKL will face double champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) today, and the outcome could well knock out one title contender in Division One of the MHF-Milo-NSC Junior Hockey League.

BJSS were lucky to salvage a point in the 2-2 draw against Petaling Jaya City Council (PJCC) on Friday, but if they do not buck up, they will be in for a drubbing at the hands of UniKL.

"We played in patches against PJCC and paid a heavy price, tomorrow (today) we have a second chance to salvage matters against UniKL and my players know that they can't afford another mediocre display if they want to keep the title," said BJSS coach S. Prakash.

UniKL coach I. Vickneswaran watched the BJSS-PJCC match and concluded that the sports school took matters lightly.

"My point of observation was that BJSS placed too much emphasis on preparing for the match against us, and took PJCC lightly.

"However, now that they have dropped two points, they will be out to make amends against us, and it could well turn out to be an exciting encounter," said Vickneswaran.

The winners today still have Bandar Penawar Sports School Thunderbolt to contend with, as the southern sports school have also shown promise.

"We will approach the BJSS match with confidence and I have a good feeling that my players will not disappoint. However, there is still Thunderbolt to play before we can start breathing easy," said Vickneswaran.

In Division Two, leaders Ipoh City Council are expected to have an easy time collecting three points and further consolidating their position when they play Negri Sembilan side Datuk Taha in Tampin.

BJSS dropped two points in the 2-2 draw with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) on Friday and they can ill afford to do so again.

BJSS coach S. Prakash admitted that they had not been playing well and that the team needed to improve.

Prakash said the pressure got to the players in the match against MBPJ.

“Sure, we have started slowly but I think the players are improving with each game. There was pressure in the MBPJ match and we could not handle it,” he said.

“Now it is a must-win situation in our remaining matches if we want to keep the league title.

“The players know this and, hopefully, will rise to the challenge.”

BJSS will definitely have to raise their game as UniKL are a potent attacking force and, in Mohd Sabri Mohd, they have a good penalty corner flicker.

Prakash, knowing that they have a battle on their hands, wants his boys to keep their defensive play tight and not give away unnecessary penalty corners.

BJSS have only conceded three goals after five matches – and two of those were against MBPJ.

“For me the other results do not matter now. The title is still within our grasp provided we win the remaining matches. So I am not unduly worried. It is ours to lose,” he said.

For UniKL, a draw will be good as they then only have to worry about BPSS-Thunderbolt.

BPSS-Thunderbolt have no matches this weekend as their match against the BJSS Juniors has been moved to May 23.

Thus, both teams will have to go all out for a win and then wait for the face-off against BPSS-Thunderbolt.
